My all-time favorite author is Jane Austen. Favorite story: Pride & Prejudice. All-time favorite literary heroine: Elizabeth Bennet. (You’ll find this and a host of things you really didn’t need to know about me here.)
So it should come as no surprise when I tell you I’m snobbishly picky about remakes of this fine tale and the actors selected to portray my beloved Lizzie and Darcy. (Is there anyone else but Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth? Really? Watch the full five-hour A&E version of Pride and Prejudice and get back to me on that.)
And yet, my new obsession is the Lizzie Bennet Diaries. This modernized adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, Pride and Prejudice, delivered via videos, is smart, sarcastic and funny. The actors take the brassy personality of Lizzie Bennet and turn it up a few notches.
It’s Pride & Prejudice meets reality TV and it’s brilliant, funny and sarcastic. All the things we love about Jane Austen’s novel.
If you’re an Austen aficionado, by now you’re probably wrinkling your nose and tsking the notion that a silly little vlog could ever be worthy of such a fine piece of literature.
First: Relax. Jennifer and Colin have nothing to worry about.
Second: I dare you to watch just one. They are completely addictive.
Treat yourself to twenty minutes of laughter. Or introduce a member of the YouTube generation who has yet to discover this gem.
You’re welcome.
