Esperanza Spalding – Bassist, Vocalist, Composer

Jul 10 2010 Published by under Recommended Listening

I love all kinds of music. It’s always fun to discover a new artist. After seeing Esperanza Spalding during the Prince tribute on the BET awards I’ve been listening to her music quite a bit. Would love to see her in concert.

Sick of Sarah – "Daisies"

Sep 26 2008 Published by under Recommended Listening, Sick of Sarah

If you haven’t already noticed; I have a pretty eclectic musical palate. I’m just as likely to be rockin’ it out to Red Hot Chili Peppers or grooving to Ne-Yo as I am to mesmerized by Andrea Bocelli or belting out Broadway tunes.

So, it shouldn’t be surprising that I liked this little diddy that I ran across today by the Minneapolis band, Sick of Sarah. I won’t lie: I checked it out because I hoped it was a spoof song that proclaimed that they were sick of a particular Sarah. Though that wasn’t the case, I liked it just the same. So, I thought I’d share:

I Need U Bad by Jazmine Sullivan

I love this song. It’s filled with raw emotion. Jazmine Sullivan has a terrific voice and I love the easy reggae feel of the song. Though, I must admit I’m a little frightened by Missy’s look in this video. I look forward to hearing the rest of her CD.

Recommended Listening

Sep 02 2008 Published by under Recommended Listening

I have a true penchant for the fusion of surprising flavors, sounds, and visuals. This is evident from my eclectic palate for music, design, foods, friends, etc. Lately, my taste for a blending of musical styles has grown insatiable. I can’t get enough of fusion music.

I love songs that blend rock and hip hop: Walk This Way, by Run DMC, Trick Daddy’s Let’s Go – loved it even more when a classical orchestra played the song during the player introductions at the NBA All-Star game a few years ago.

Two of my ultimate favorite fusion types are Asian Fusion and Latin Jazz. I often listen to Japanese composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto. He is also in heavy rotation in my Classical and Work playlists on FineTune. His Energy Flow is simply sublime and his pieces written for movies like The Last Emperor are both beautiful and moving.

There are so many fantastic
Latin Jazz artists that I can’t begin to name them all. However, if you have a taste for something new, something spicy, bursting with flavor, I’d urge you to give it a try.

Rockers, Relationships & Redemption

My favorite song of the moment. Who knew rockers could be so insightful?

This baby is burning up my poor little Sansa MP3 player. You should feel sorry for it and for the DH & DS – GQ Jones and Mini Record Mogul, respectively. Why?

Because I never let a little thing like being tone deaf stop me from singing my little heart out. As much as my sore throat – part of the plague that Mini Record Mogul passed on to me this week – will allow. After all, I can barely hear myself. And by the time it filters through the cranked up tune I sound pretty doggone good. :-)

What song is your family tired of hearing you sing?

Elliot Yamin-ecine

Stephanie Edwards, Voted off of American Idol this week.

This year’s American Idol is shaping up really strangely (read insane). Sanjaya Malakar keeps hangin’ on through the grace of tone deaf teeny boppers and a crop of voters with extremely questionable judgement and perhaps non-functioning hearing aids. But, enough about that.

I am self-medicating to get over my mini-depression over the loss of Stephanie Edwards, who I was sure would be one of the final three or four. No, I’m not hitting pills or booze (though I could make a good case for an extra glass of Moscato). Instead I’ve opted for a healthy dose of Idol Blast from the Last…season, that is. I’ve been listening to Chris Daughtry’s CD – excellent – and I just picked up Elliot Yamin’s new CD at Target this morning. Our “funky white boy” has had a makeover. Soft, tousled curls, straight teeth. Boyfriend looks pretty hot and he sounds better than ever. Take a listen below.

Namaste,

Samara Leigh

Soundtrack Addictions

Jan 24 2007 Published by under Pop Culture, Recommended Listening

I could listen to this CD for hours on end – and I have. This satisfies both my classical music and movie soundtrack addiction in one neat little fix. Get a little sample here. Sample the rest of the album by clicking on the graphic and scrolling to the bottom of the page.

Enjoy,

Samara Leigh
